Food for Thought: Fantastic Fruits

Fruit is an excellent source of vitamins as well as healthy, natural sugars. Nonetheless, it is important to remember that even fruit sugars are still sugar and, therefore, should be consumed in moderation. In addition, it is important to make smart choices regarding the fruit that you eat in order to keep your overall sugar count at a minimum. To that end, here is a list of those fruits that are best to include in your diet due to their lower sugar count:

  • Apples: 1 medium-sized apple has 10 grams of sugar. Apples are high in soluble fiber, which helps to control insulin levels, cleans and detoxifies blood and reduces intestinal disorders. They are also an excellent source of flavonoids, potassium and vitamins C and A.
  • Blackberries: 1 cup has 7 grams of sugar. Blackberries are high in tannin, which aids in digestion and reducing inflammation. They also help to tighten tissues and aid in memory. Rich in Vitamin K, they also serve as a muscle relaxant.
  • Blueberries: 1 cup has 15 grams of sugar. Blueberries are high in antioxidants and can help to improve your memory. Eat fresh or frozen.
  • Grapefruit: 1 serving has 8 grams of sugar. Grapefruit is high in vitamin C, flavonoids and lycopene, which means it helps to lower cholesterol and combats your body’s cell aging.
  • Raspberries: 1 cup has 5 grams of sugar. Raspberries are high in antioxidant phytonutrients, which helps to reduce inflammation, lower oxidative stress and alter the development and reproduction of cancer cells. Raspberries also help to increase metabolism.
  • Strawberries: 1 cup has 7 grams of sugar. Strawberries help to ease inflammation, burn stored fat and boost short-term memory. They also promote bone and eye health while helping to prevent esophageal cancer. Strawberries have anti-aging properties as well.

By keeping these fruits at the top of your list when you reach for a snack, you will be sure to keep on track with your weight loss goals.
