3 Tips for Keeping Your New Year’s Fitness Resolution

With the New Year right around the corner, you may be considering a New Year’s Resolution that involves taking control of your weight and overall health. While New Year’s Resolutions are easy to make, they are not always easy to keep. To help ensure you continue to work toward your health and fitness goals for 2021, here are a few tips to keep in mind when making your Resolution this year.

Tip #1: Be Specific

When setting a goal, it is best to create a specific goal that you can monitor for success. Rather than simply saying, “I will lose weight,” your goal should be to lose a specific amount of weight. This way, you can more effectively monitor your progress and keep yourself accountable.

Tip #2: Set Short and Long-Term Goals

You will also be more successful with your health journey if you set both short and long-term goals, with the short-term goals designed to support your long-term goal. For example, you may set a goal to workout 5 times per week for an hour each time, but it may be better for you to start off smaller with 30 minute workouts three times a week. You can then gradually increase the frequency and length of your workout sessions until you reach your ultimate goal.

Tip #3: Make it Public

To help ensure that you hold yourself accountable to your fitness goals, it is a good idea to make your Resolution public. By letting others know about your goals, you are less likely to back down from working toward reaching them. In addition, talking about your goals can help you create a network of supporters who can provide you with encouragement, help and advice through your fitness journey. Better yet, find someone to be a “fitness buddy” who will go on your journey with you!
